Career Options after 10th – In Science, Commerce & Arts

The 10th standard exam is the first board exam as well as an academic milestone for a student. Once they clear this, they can choose their career based on their interests. Apart from doing 11th\12th, a student can also pursue diplomas and vocational courses after the 10th. In this article, we will see what are the different career options after the 10th.

After the 10th you have three streams available – Science, Commerce & Arts. Hence we are going to talk about what are the carrier opportunities available in these streams. There are lots of carrier opportunities, so many courses available such as certificate courses, professional courses, undergraduate courses, etc. I cannot cover all those courses in one article. Therefore I am going to cover popular courses here.

1. Science -

Science is the most popular stream among parents and students. It offers carrier options in engineering, medical and research roles. The major advantage of science is, that after class 12th you can switch from science to commerce or science to arts. There are multiple career options available for the science stream after class 12th.

Let’s consider if you decided to choose the science stream for the 11th\12th. Then let’s talk about what are the subject combination you can have.

List of Subject Combination -

  1. PCMB + English + Language
  2. PCMB + English + IT (vocational)
  3. PCM + English + Lang + optional subject
  4. PCB + English + Lang + optional subject

If you take general science then the plain combination is PCMB(Physics/Chemistry/Maths/Biology) + English + Language. Here the second language could be anything like Hindi, Marathi, Gujrathi, Sanskrit, Urdu, etc. Second combination is – PCMB + English + IT. This second language will be dropped and IT will be added. This is college-dependent. This is also known as a vocational course.

If you are interested in engineering. You are going to give JEE Main exam. Then this combination is for you. The third combination is – PCM + English + Language + Optional Subject. You can skip biology.  Instead of biology, you can have an optional subject. We will talk about the optional subject ahead.

If you want to go for medical but you are not interested in maths. In this case, fourth combination(PCB + English +Language + Optional Subject) is made for you.

Optional Subjects

  • Philosophy
  • Psychology
  • Sociology
  • Economics
  • History
  • Geography

All arts subjects are optional subjects. You have a total of 6 choices. You can choose any one subject as an optional subject.

Bifocal -

PCM + English + Bifocal subject (200 marks)

What is bifocal?

A bifocal program allows students from the science stream to skip second language and biology subjects during Classes 11 and 12, and instead take a 200-mark elective like electrical maintenance or computer science. Bifocal is exclusively meant for people who want to do engineering.

Bifocal Subjects –

  • C.S
  • Electronics
  • Electrical maintenance
  • Civil
  • Mechanical

From these 5 subjects, you can choose any one subject as your bifocal subject. Again this is college dependant, which subjects your college will offer you.
